Potsdam Civic Center Application for the National Register of Historic Places

Friday January 30th, 2015
The Civic Center in Potsdam was built in 1934/35. The old Town Hall that once stood in the same location was condemned and torn down at that time and the sandstone was re-purposed for the new construction. Old stone buildings need to be maintained, the mortar is of particular importance as it helps the building breath, controlling moisture retention. In our climate when moisture is trapped and freezes, as we all know, it causes problems. The museum curator is proposing that we make an application to the National Register of Historic Places for the Civic Center. Having a building on the register gives the owners, in this case the village, opportunity to apply for grants to preserve the building and address the problems that exist and prevent it from deteriorating. The museum curator, Mimi Van Deusen, will give a short presentation to the Village Board on Monday, February 3, 2015 at the 7 pm meeting at the Civic Center in the Board Room. Interested parties are encouraged to attend the meeting to ask questions and voice support or opposition of this endeavor. For more information, call the curator at the museum at (315) 265- 6910.
