Wassail! 2026 Returns for a Festive Midwinter Celebration

January 9 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The beloved winter tradition Wassail! returns on Friday, January 23, 2026, inviting the community to gather for an evening of warmth, merriment, and seasonal celebration from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at St. Lawrence Nurseries, 6527 NY-56, Potsdam.

Traditionally, a wassail is a midwinter gathering held to bless an orchard—casting away evil spirits and ensuring a strong harvest in the coming season. The custom includes “toasting” the trees with bread and pouring cider at their roots as a symbol of good fortune and abundance. Wassail! 2026 honors this centuries-old tradition while offering a welcoming, community-centered winter celebration.

Weather permitting, attendees are encouraged to snowshoe, cross-country ski, hike, or simply tromp through the orchard. Bonfires will be lit throughout the grounds, creating cozy spaces to warm up, gather with friends, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Supporting the local food and drink system is a central part of the celebration. The evening will feature hearty soup from Big Spoon Kitchen, local vendors with fresh bread and cider.

Costumes, musical instruments, and general merriment are strongly encouraged. In keeping with the spirit of the season, those still holding onto their Christmas trees are invited to contribute them to the evening’s bonfires. Trees may be dropped off at the farm by arrangement.

Additional details and reminders will be shared as the event approaches. For more information, visit St. Lawrence Nurseries on social media or email trees@slngrow.com.
